Wrapped in a fur rug, Jade and I rode in a carriage trough a heavy snowfall to buy shoes with woolen uppers. The driver, sitting high on the platform on top, rocked as he sang a ballad in a hoarse voice. The wind whistled in our ears. Big thick snowflakes danced before our eyes. The horizon was in a blurry mist. I silently prayed that Jade would soon get her darling shoes. From my heart I wanted her to be saved...
